Cameroon’s prime minister attends AU summit on conflict resolution

President Paul Biya of Cameroon dispatched Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute to Luanda, Angola, to participate in the 21st extraordinary session of the African Union’s Conference of Heads of State and Government. The discussions at this crucial gathering will center on enhancing mechanisms for preventing and resolving conflicts across the African continent.

Despite his recent high-profile return to Yaoundé, President Paul Biya opted not to travel to Luanda for the African Union’s 21st extraordinary session of Heads of State and Government, scheduled for August 30. Instead, the Head of State formally mandated Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute to represent Cameroon and articulate its positions at this significant assembly.

The Prime Minister departed Yaoundé on Saturday, heading for Luanda, Angola. The primary focus of this extraordinary session remains the critical task of bolstering frameworks for conflict prevention and resolution throughout Africa. Notably, the agenda addresses various ongoing crises, including the persistent Boko Haram insurgency in Cameroon’s Far North region and the escalating separatist unrest within the country’s Anglophone territories.

Following his engagement in Angola, Prime Minister Ngute is also slated to travel to Serbia. There, he will again represent President Biya at a high-level meeting commemorating the 65th anniversary of the inaugural Conference of Heads of State and Government of Non-Aligned Countries. This event is scheduled to take place in Belgrade from August 31 to September 1, 2026.
