ECOWAS and un women endorse regional gender and green economy initiative for west africa

Abidjan recently hosted a pivotal meeting where the ECOWAS Centre for Gender Development (ECGD), in collaboration with UN Women and various specialized ECOWAS agencies, officially validated a comprehensive regional program. This groundbreaking initiative focuses on the interconnected themes of gender, climate change, and the burgeoning green economy across West Africa.

The crucial two-day gathering, held on May 15 and 16 at the ECOWAS Resident Representation in Côte d’Ivoire, aimed to finalize the strategic framework for the program. Participants diligently worked to define a clear roadmap for its effective implementation, ensuring a structured approach to regional development.

At its core, this program is designed to bolster existing regional efforts. It seeks to address the critical priorities of member states concerning gender equality, climate resilience, and the broader ecological transition. Furthermore, it plays a vital role in mobilizing financial support for the ECOWAS Action Plan on Gender and Climate Change, underscoring the region’s commitment to sustainable development.

Sandra Oulaté Fattoh, Director of the ECGD, highlighted the dual nature of the ecological transition. She emphasized that this shift presents both significant challenges and substantial opportunities for women and young girls across the West African landscape, pointing to the need for inclusive strategies.

Adjaratou Fatou Ndiaye, UN Women’s Resident Representative in Côte d’Ivoire, underscored the initiative’s importance, describing it as a tangible move “from political rhetoric to concrete action.” This sentiment reflects a shared urgency in confronting the pressing climatic and economic issues facing the region.

Dr. Kalilou Sylla, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, reiterated this call for action. He stressed the imperative of fostering an inclusive green transition that actively creates genuine opportunities for both women and youth, ensuring no segment of society is left behind in the journey towards sustainability.

The final document for this ambitious program is slated for formal adoption during a dedicated working session scheduled to take place in Lomé, Togo, from June 29 to July 6, 2026.
