Libreville — A landmark strategic partnership dialogue between Gabon and the European Union kicked off on Monday, marking a pivotal moment in bilateral relations. Convened at the Palais des Congrès Omar Bongo Ondimba, this year’s session reflects the nation’s renewed commitment to institutional stability and sustainable development under the framework of the Fifth Republic, following the April 2025 presidential election.
The high-level gathering brought together government officials and EU ambassadors to explore avenues for deepening collaboration. Key discussion points included political reforms, economic growth strategies, governance improvements, environmental protection, and regional cohesion. Representing the Gabonese government, Vice-President of the Government Hermann Immongault underscored the nation’s transition from aid dependency to a results-driven partnership built on shared investments, local value creation, skills transfer, and human capital development.
« The transitional phase has concluded, and since the April 12, 2025 presidential election, Gabon has embarked on a new institutional trajectory under the Fifth Republic, » Immongault stated. He emphasized that this evolution aligns with the Samoa Agreement, now the guiding framework for this revitalized cooperation model.
Advancing green investment and ecological transition
Gabon’s Vice-President highlighted the global significance of preserving the country’s natural heritage. « The protection of our forests and biodiversity is not just a national priority—it is a global imperative that demands fairer international recognition and support for nations actively safeguarding these ecosystems, » he asserted. He called for stronger global financing mechanisms to harmonize economic progress, industrialization, and environmental stewardship. Additionally, Gabon reaffirmed its dedication to multilateralism, regional stability in Central Africa, and the security of the Gulf of Guinea.
Cécile Abadie, the EU Ambassador to Gabon, commended the depth of the ongoing dialogue. She stressed the need to modernize cooperation tools between the two partners, advocating for a « renewed, balanced partnership » focused on tangible outcomes. « We are fully committed to fostering exchanges that prioritize investment, reform, and mutual benefits, » she noted, signaling the EU’s readiness to support Gabon’s sustainable development goals.
