The Malian Ministry of Health and Social Development officially received 39 robust 4×4 all-terrain vehicles on Thursday, February 5, 2026. These crucial additions are set to significantly bolster the nation’s health infrastructure, enhancing access to vital medical services, particularly immunization programs, across Mali’s most underserved regions. The handover ceremony took place at the Ministry of Health’s main offices within Bamako’s Cité administrative.
Valued at an estimated 689 million CFA francs, this fleet of vehicles represents a tangible outcome of the robust and productive collaboration between Mali’s Ministry of Health and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. Minister of Health, Assa Badiallo Touré, emphasized that this delivery is part of an ongoing commitment, noting that 68 vehicles were previously acquired in 2023 with World Bank funding to support COVID-19 vaccination efforts. She further indicated that additional essential equipment is anticipated later in 2026.
« These new 4×4 vehicles will significantly enhance the operational capabilities of our healthcare facilities, particularly in monitoring and executing health interventions, especially those vital for vaccination campaigns, » Minister Touré affirmed during her address. She urged all recipients and drivers to ensure diligent maintenance of the vehicles, stressing the importance of preserving these assets amidst current challenges as the ministry continues to expand its service vehicle fleet.
Speaking on behalf of the technical and financial partners, Fosca Giulidori, UNICEF’s representative in Mali, highlighted the profound symbolic significance of the occasion. She stated, « Far beyond a mere exchange of keys, this event signifies a powerful demonstration of international solidarity, embodying Gavi’s unwavering commitment to accelerating global immunization and ensuring equitable access to life-saving vaccines. »
According to Ms. Giulidori, these 39 vehicles will serve as critical lifelines for the Malian health system. Their deployment will enable the secure transport of vaccines and other essential medical supplies, adhering strictly to standards, to even the most remote health centers. Furthermore, they will facilitate the deployment of mobile health teams to hard-to-reach communities and bolster crucial activities such as immunization drives, nutritional monitoring, and the delivery of other vital healthcare services for the benefit of the population.
