Senegal hosts pan-african parliamentary unity talks

Dakar became the epicenter of African parliamentary diplomacy on Tuesday as the Senegalese National Assembly welcomed delegates from across the continent for the 85th session of the African Parliamentary Union (APU) Executive Committee.
The gathering, held on June 3-4, 2026, saw Ousmane Sonko, President of the National Assembly, deliver a keynote address emphasizing the urgent need for stronger continental collaboration. In his opening remarks, he conveyed deep satisfaction and national pride in hosting representatives from multiple African parliaments in Dakar.
Addressing the delegates, Mr. Sonko highlighted the critical role of parliamentary cooperation in overcoming shared challenges—including political instability, economic vulnerabilities, and escalating security threats—that continue to test the continent’s resilience. “In a moment when Africa faces unprecedented challenges, parliamentary solidarity is not just beneficial—it is essential,” he asserted.
The Senegalese parliamentary leader reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the panafrican vision, stressing that the continent’s future must be shaped by Africans themselves, guided by their shared values, collective aspirations, and mutual interests. He expressed confidence that the deliberations in Dakar would advance the cause of African integration and amplify the continent’s unified ambitions.
Concluding his address with a call for unity, Mr. Sonko declared, “Long live African parliamentary cooperation. Long live a united and sovereign Africa.”
