SENEGAL-SECURITY
Dakar – Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has issued a strong directive to ministers responsible for flood prevention, urging them to implement all necessary measures before the onset of the upcoming rainy season.
During a recent Council of Ministers session, Mr. Sonko provided precise instructions, emphasizing the critical need for preparedness. He specifically tasked the implicated ministries with ensuring the immediate execution of several key actions.
These directives include the swift updating and validation of all communal emergency plans, alongside a thorough verification of the operational readiness of early warning systems and communication channels. The Prime Minister also called for the strategic pre-positioning of intervention resources and the organization of an inter-ministerial simulation exercise, which must be completed before June 15, 2026.
The preparatory efforts undertaken by the Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation, as well as various state services, have received commendation from the Prime Minister. These efforts encompass crucial activities such as the clearing of drainage networks, inspection of existing drainage infrastructure, the pre-positioning of essential pumps, and the meticulous development of comprehensive emergency plans.
Recognizing the inherently inter-ministerial nature of flood prevention, Prime Minister Sonko has exhorted all state services to foster seamless synergy. This collaborative effort will be coordinated by the Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation, with vital support from the Ministry of Interior, particularly concerning civil protection and crisis management aspects.
