Togo universities unite under UNESCO chairs to boost national development

How can university research better align with the nation’s evolving needs? This critical question brought together leaders of Togo’s UNESCO academic chairs on July 9, 2026, in Lomé. Organized by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the meeting provided an opportunity to assess ongoing initiatives and chart a new strategic path to enhance the impact of scientific research on national progress.

UNESCO chairs convene to redefine academic cooperation

Under the leadership of the Minister Delegate for Higher Education and Scientific Research, Professor Gado Tchangbedji, the gathering brought together the National Commission for UNESCO and heads of the country’s UNESCO chairs based in public universities. Among the key participants were representatives from the UNESCO Chair on Renewable Energies at the University of Lomé, the UNESCO Chair on Women, Science, and Sustainable Water Management in West Africa (also at the University of Lomé), and the UNESCO Chair on ICT and Higher Education Development in West Africa at the University of Kara.

Research as a catalyst for Togo’s progress

Discussions centered on evaluating the active projects, challenges faced, and contributions made by these chairs to public policy. The consensus was clear: strengthening these academic structures is essential to address Togo’s most pressing challenges—from the energy transition and sustainable water resource management to gender equality and digital transformation in higher education.

Proposals for a stronger, unified research network

The meeting led to several actionable recommendations aimed at improving coordination across the network. Participants called for the creation of a shared digital platform connecting the National Commission for UNESCO and the chairs. This tool is expected to streamline knowledge exchange, facilitate joint project implementation, and boost collaboration between academic institutions. Additionally, they emphasized the importance of strengthening ties with technical and financial partners to secure robust support for research initiatives.

Government urges research with national relevance

Closing the session, Professor Tchangbedji underscored the need for research programs to directly address Togo’s development priorities. He stressed that scientific output must deliver tangible results—capable of informing policy decisions and driving economic and social transformation. The minister also expressed hope that this gathering would mark a turning point in strengthening higher education by fostering stronger collaboration among researchers, universities, and national institutions.

Toward a more influential academic ecosystem

This conference reflects the government’s commitment to harnessing the scientific expertise within Togo’s public universities. By deepening collaboration among UNESCO chairs, expanding partnerships, and aligning research with national needs, the country aims to build a more robust scientific ecosystem. The ultimate goal is to position research as a powerful engine of innovation and sustainable growth for Togo.
