African football turmoil: Senegal’s AFCON 2025 title revoked by CAF

The Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) decision to strip Senegal of their AFCON 2025 title, awarding it to Morocco, has sparked an unprecedented crisis of confidence across African football. Numerous clubs, prominent experts, and international media outlets have voiced unanimous criticism against CAF’s handling of the situation.

Recent reports indicate a surge in strong reactions following CAF’s controversial ruling. According to AS, Egyptian football club Pharco FC declared an indefinite boycott of all CAF-organized tournaments, citing the decision against Senegal as “unjust, politically motivated, and against the spirit of sportsmanship.”

Pharco FC is not alone; several other prominent Egyptian and Algerian clubs have expressed solidarity with Senegal, contemplating similar boycotts of future continental competitions. Major teams such as Mamelodi Sundowns from South Africa and Simba SC from Tanzania have condemned the ruling as “shameful,” warning that it sets a dangerous precedent for the integrity of African football.

The controversy stems from CAF’s retroactive judgment that Senegal had forfeited their AFCON 2025 final match against Morocco with a 0-3 score. This official verdict declared Senegal guilty of violating regulations by leaving the field in protest of a penalty awarded to Morocco late in regulation time.

What makes this situation particularly contentious is that the match itself resumed after a 10-minute stoppage. Senegal returned to play, ultimately securing a 1-0 lead after extra time with a goal from Pape Gueye, and even lifted the championship trophy in Rabat on January 18.

However, following an appeal lodged by Morocco, CAF unexpectedly altered the outcome, declaring Morocco the 3-0 winner and retroactively awarding them the championship title.

This reversal immediately sent shockwaves throughout the global football community. L’Équipe labeled it one of the most “bizarre and controversial” decisions in modern football history, while The Athletic highlighted the unprecedented nature of such a ruling in a continental championship.

Many football experts have also questioned the rationale behind CAF’s decision. They argue that if Senegal’s actions constituted a grave infraction, the referee and match organizers should have halted the game or declared a forfeiture immediately, rather than waiting until after the final whistle and Morocco’s subsequent appeal to change the result.

The Senegalese Football Federation has since confirmed its intention to appeal the ruling to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and FIFA. African media outlets have even reported that the Senegalese national team is considering withdrawing from all CAF competitions, protesting what they perceive as unfair treatment.

This incident severely tarnishes the image of African football, especially given that the Africa Cup of Nations is considered the continent’s most prestigious national team competition. There are widespread concerns that if this crisis persists, the prestige and competitive integrity of future CAF tournaments could be significantly jeopardized in the years to come.
