The inauguration of the 40-megawatt power plant gifted by Algeria to the Republic of Chad marks a pivotal moment in deepening ties between Algiers and N’Djamena. This ambitious project underscores a shared commitment to mutual development and energy cooperation in the region.
On Monday, Chad’s Prime Minister Allamaye Halina joined his Algerian counterpart, Sifi Ghrieb, for the groundbreaking ceremony in N’Djamena, symbolizing the start of a transformative infrastructure initiative.
Sonatrach-led project to energize Chad’s capital
Under the guidance of Algeria’s Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies, Sonelgaz International—a subsidiary of the national energy giant Sonelgaz—has been tasked with executing this strategic project. The plant, equipped with state-of-the-art gas turbines, is designed to meet Chad’s escalating electricity demand while ensuring a stable power supply for N’Djamena and surrounding areas.
Prime Minister Ghrieb, representing President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, emphasized the project’s significance as a cornerstone of Algeria’s broader vision for African solidarity. «This initiative reflects Algeria’s unwavering dedication to fostering concrete partnerships that uplift African communities», he stated during the ceremony’s technical briefing, which outlined engineering specifications, implementation phases, and long-term operational goals.
Strengthening a partnership built on shared vision
In his address, Ghrieb highlighted the deep-rooted ties between Algeria and Chad, noting that the project embodies the «firm political will of both nations to elevate bilateral relations into a robust strategic partnership». He described the initiative as a tangible outcome of high-level discussions during President Tebboune’s official visit to Chad in April 2026, which yielded a series of ambitious cooperation agreements across multiple sectors.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the power plant is more than an infrastructure milestone—it symbolizes Algeria’s pledge to support Chad’s development goals, particularly in sectors critical to improving citizens’ quality of life. «President Tebboune’s vision prioritizes fraternal solidarity and mutual prosperity, reinforcing our shared ambition to build a more integrated and resilient Africa», he remarked.
Regional stability through African-led collaboration
Ghrieb underscored the project’s role in promoting regional stability, asserting that «effective African cooperation must translate into tangible benefits for our people». He outlined Algeria and Chad’s joint commitment to large-scale initiatives, including the Trans-Saharan Highway, fiber-optic connectivity, and enhanced air transport and logistics networks—all aimed at unlocking economic potential and fostering intra-African trade.
The Prime Minister reiterated Algeria’s stance on «African solutions to African challenges», stressing the importance of sovereignty and coordinated action in addressing continental issues. «Our collaboration with Chad is rooted in a shared belief in unity and collective progress», he affirmed, adding that both nations remain steadfast in aligning their regional policies to ensure stability and shared prosperity.
By spearheading this power plant project, Algeria and Chad are setting a precedent for how African partnerships can drive sustainable development and energy security, reinforcing their positions as key players in the continent’s economic integration.
