Bénin and Niger lift barriers to boost bilateral ties
On June 2, Cotonou and Niamey reinforced their commitment to deepening collaboration across multiple sectors during an official visit by Beninese President Romuald Wadagni to Niger, at the invitation of his counterpart, Abdourahamane Tiani.
A joint statement issued after the meeting highlighted both leaders’ shared conviction in strengthening political, economic, scientific, and cultural ties. They agreed to intensify mutual exchanges, particularly through the regular convening of the Niger-Benin Joint Cooperation Commission.
Key to their discussions was the removal of all obstacles hindering bilateral cooperation, with a primary focus on reopening the Benin-Niger border. This long-closed border had long stifled human movement and local trade, creating economic hardships for communities on both sides.
To translate their political will into action, the two presidents established an Expert Committee tasked with identifying these barriers and proposing viable solutions within a 15-day deadline.
The talks between Wadagni and Tiani, joined by their delegations, were described as “cordial and productive,” covering an in-depth review of the challenges facing both nations, alongside regional and global developments.
Both leaders celebrated the “long-standing bonds of brotherhood, friendship, and cooperation” uniting their countries, reaffirming their shared determination to elevate bilateral relations to meet the aspirations of their people for peace, security, and development.
President Wadagni, sworn in on May 24, has prioritized normalizing relations with neighboring states. He extended an invitation to President Tiani to undertake an official visit to Bénin.
