The newly inaugurated President of Bénin, Romuald Wadagni, who officially took office on May 24, 2026, initiated a significant diplomatic journey across West Africa on Tuesday, June 2. His itinerary included crucial visits to Niger and Burkina Faso, with the primary objective of normalizing and stabilizing relations between Bénin and the Alliance of Sahel States. This tour signifies a pivotal effort to re-establish regional cooperation.
President Wadagni’s visit to Niger carries particular historical significance, as he becomes the first Béninese head of state to travel to the nation since the overthrow of President Mohamed Bazoum and the subsequent rise to power of General Abdourahamane Tiani on July 26, 2023.
Although two of his predecessors in Bénin had previously attempted mediation between the two countries, leading to a working visit by a Nigerien delegation to Cotonou in July 2024, official progress toward full normalization of relations has remained stagnant until this current visit.
To date, the borders between Bénin and Niger continue to be closed, resulting in severe economic repercussions for both nations and significantly hindering the free movement of individuals and goods.
