Burkina Faso ends diplomatic ties with France amid escalating tensions

All twelve Burkinabè diplomats stationed in France have returned to Ouagadougou, marking the official closure of the country’s embassy in Paris. This decisive move follows Burkina Faso’s announcement of a complete rupture in diplomatic relations with France.

Official closure of Burkina Faso’s Paris embassy

The twelve diplomats were received by Burkina Faso’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré, who collected the national flag and diplomatic keys from the Paris embassy. The government confirmed this act symbolizes the definitive end of Burkina Faso’s diplomatic presence in France, dismissing claims of asylum requests by any staff members.

Diplomatic rupture justified by mutual decisions

On June 26, Burkina Faso declared the severance of all diplomatic ties with France. In response, French diplomats were expelled from Ouagadougou in early July, while Burkinabè diplomats were given until July 6 to leave French territory. Ouagadougou cited what it described as France’s « persistent activism against national interests » as justification for the decision. Paris, in turn, condemned the move as « hostile and unfounded. »

Years of deteriorating relations

Since Captain Ibrahim Traoré assumed power in September 2022, Burkina Faso has systematically distanced itself from its former French partner. Following the withdrawal of French military forces, Ouagadougou has increasingly pivoted toward alternative alliances, notably with Russia, Turkey, and Iran.
