Burundian president Évariste Ndayishimiye arrives in Kinshasa for strategic state visit

Évariste Ndayishimiye, the President of Burundi and the current Chairperson of the African Union, is scheduled to arrive in Kinshasa this Monday, June 22, 2026, for a high-level 48-hour state visit to the République démocratique du Congo.

This diplomatic mission follows a formal invitation extended by President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi. The visit underscores the deep-rooted historical connections and the enduring friendship between the people of Burundi and the République démocratique du Congo.

A high-level diplomatic agenda

President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi will travel to N’djili International Airport to personally welcome his Burundian counterpart. The two heads of state are expected to hold private consultations at the Cité de l’Union africaine, followed by a joint press conference to address the media.

The discussions will center on several issues of mutual importance, specifically focusing on the security situation in the eastern regions of the République démocratique du Congo and the ongoing public health response to the Ebola virus. This visit occurs at a pivotal moment as President Évariste Ndayishimiye continues his tenure leading the African Union.

Strengthening the military and strategic alliance

In the volatile Great Lakes region, Burundi and the République démocratique du Congo have emerged as vital strategic partners. This relationship was formalized through a bilateral defense agreement signed in March 2023. To combat the persistent insecurity fueled by the AFC/M23 rebellion and its affiliates in Sud-Kivu, Bujumbura has committed thousands of soldiers to support the Congolese armed forces (FARDC) and maintain stability along their shared border.

This military collaboration is built on a framework of continuous cooperation. Defense leaders from both nations frequently reiterate their commitment to this partnership. Currently, a significant number of Burundian troops are stationed in Sud-Kivu and other frontline sectors, working alongside the FARDC to neutralize armed groups and foster lasting peace across the region.
