Opposition leader Joshua Osih demands immediate election adherence
Speaking at a press conference on July 23, Social Democratic Front (SDF) leader Joshua Osih insisted that elections must proceed without delay. He emphasized that the electoral calendar is not a government prerogative but a matter of public right, urging all opposition factions to form a united front to enforce this principle.
« Elections must happen on time — no extensions. The electoral calendar belongs to the people, not the government. I call on all opposition parties to form a Common Front to demand this right,» Osih declared. So far, his appeal has not elicited any response from opposition figures.
Recent election delays spark fresh controversy
Osih’s demand follows months after municipal and legislative elections were postponed. The government cited financial, logistical, and security constraints, alongside calendar adjustments, to justify the delays. A new election law passed by the National Assembly and signed by President Paul Biya in June 2026 extended mandates until February 2027.
Government officials have defended the postponements, citing financial shortages, logistical hurdles, and security challenges as key factors in rescheduling the polls.
