Chad expands diplomatic reach with formal ties to the Bahamas

Chadian authorities announced the official establishment of diplomatic relations between Chad and the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, marked by the signing of a joint communiqué in New York.

The formal document was signed on July 16 by Mouctar Abakar, Chad’s permanent representative to the United Nations, alongside his Bahamian counterpart, Stan James.

This communiqué outlines a mutual commitment from both nations to foster cooperation and friendship. Their partnership will be built upon principles of sovereign equality, respect for each other’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, and crucially, non-interference in internal affairs.

The Commonwealth of the Bahamas, an island nation nestled in the Caribbean, boasts a population of approximately 420,000. It gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1973. The Bahamian economy thrives primarily on tourism and its robust financial services sector. Renowned as a leading global offshore financial center, the country is frequently characterized as a tax haven due to its advantageous tax policies and the prominence of its international financial industry.

This formalization of diplomatic ties aligns with N’Djamena’s stated ambition to diversify and strengthen its partnerships across the international community.
