The Catholic bishops of Chad have issued a powerful call for urgent dialogue to break the country’s political deadlock. In a formal statement released this week, the nation’s spiritual leaders expressed deep concern over Chad’s rapidly deteriorating political climate and urged authorities to foster trust and open pathways to reconciliation.
«A sincere and inclusive dialogue is the only viable solution to the current impasse,» the bishops declared. Their message comes at a critical moment, as Chad grapples with escalating intercommunal violence and rising political tensions.
Violent clashes spark urgent calls from Church leaders
Recent weeks have seen a sharp rise in deadly intercommunal violence across Chad. On May 5, an attack on a military base in Barka Toulorom, near Lake Chad, resulted in at least 23 fatalities, according to official government reports. Just days earlier, on April 26, intercommunal clashes in eastern Chad claimed 42 lives.
The bishops condemned these acts of violence in the strongest terms, reaffirming that «no one has the right to take a human life». They emphasized that violence only deepens divisions and warned that resorting to force cannot resolve disputes—it only fuels further instability and mistrust.
Upholding pluralism amid political tensions
In their statement, the bishops also highlighted growing concerns over the recent wave of arrests targeting opposition figures and critics. «These detentions undermine Chad’s democratic foundations and threaten the principles of free speech and human rights», they warned. Such actions, they argued, weaken social cohesion and endanger the nation’s long-standing commitment to peaceful coexistence.
Urging respect for cultural, political, and religious pluralism, the bishops stressed that diversity is a source of national strength, not division. «Exclusion, violence, and injustice can only be overcome through mutual respect, dialogue, and justice for all», they stated.
A path forward through dialogue and reconciliation
The bishops firmly believe that sincere, inclusive dialogue is the only way to break the current deadlock. «Constructive discussions grounded in truth, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to peace are essential for reconciliation and lasting stability in Chad», they wrote. They called on authorities to demonstrate wisdom and restraint, fostering an environment of trust conducive to healing and unity.
The bishops extended their heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and urged all Chadians to stand together in solidarity. «In these difficult times, we must unite in compassion and support one another», they said. «Peace is a precious gift that we must preserve together.»
