Côte d’Ivoire ramps up fight against illegal gold panning with advanced surveillance tools
Ivory Coast’s government is deploying an arsenal of high-tech equipment to crack down on illegal gold mining across the country. The initiative includes 300 motorcycles, 30 pickup trucks, 12 Zodiac boats, and drones—all aimed at boosting the capabilities of the Special Group for Combating Illegal Gold Panning (GS-LOI), established in 2021.
This enhanced deployment reflects a strategic shift toward 24/7 surveillance of clandestine mining sites, both on land and in waterways. Authorities emphasize the need for round-the-clock operational readiness to disrupt illicit activities effectively.

National security priority takes center stage
Illegal gold panning has been reclassified as a national security imperative by the National Security Council, as stated by Executive Secretary Fidèle Sarassoro. The move follows a surge in unregulated mining activities that threaten environmental stability and public safety.
To reinforce legal consequences, the government recently amended the Penal Code, introducing stricter penalties for offenders. Violators now face fines ranging from 50 to 100 million CFA francs and imprisonment from 2 to 5 years. The penalties escalate to 20 years in prison if a public official is involved in the illegal operations.
These measures underscore Ivory Coast’s commitment to eradicating illegal mining, aligning with broader regional efforts to regulate extractive industries in West Africa.
Expanding operational reach with cutting-edge resources
The newly acquired equipment enables GS-LOI to conduct rapid response operations across diverse terrains. Drones provide aerial surveillance, while Zodiac boats enhance mobility in riverine areas where illegal mining is prevalent. The expanded fleet ensures authorities can intervene promptly, regardless of location or time of day.
The initiative also includes comprehensive mapping of high-risk zones to preempt unauthorized mining activities. By leveraging technology and stricter legal frameworks, Ivory Coast aims to restore order to its mining sector while protecting natural resources.
