SOLIBRA has officially inaugurated the ECO BOX project, a significant undertaking designed to intensify efforts against plastic contamination and foster a sustainable circular economy within the commune of Treichville. This launch coincided with World No Plastic Bag Day, observed on July 3, 2026.
The selection of Treichville for this crucial initiative stems from the substantial daily volumes of plastic waste it generates. These discarded materials frequently obstruct drainage systems and compromise vital sanitation infrastructure. In response to this pressing challenge, ECO BOX aims to convert these waste products into valuable resources through a well-organized collection and recycling framework.
This ambitious project is built upon a collaborative alliance involving SOLIBRA, the Fondation J’Adore de Treichville, and BIRWAST, a company specializing in plastic waste recycling. This synergistic partnership seeks to enhance waste management practices, safeguard the urban environment, and cultivate new economic prospects at the local level.
To facilitate the immediate commencement of operations, essential equipment was provided to the operational teams. This included six wheelbarrows, a collection tricycle, 80 trash bags, twelve rakes, along with gloves, shovels, and traditional brooms.
Through ECO BOX, the collaborating partners are committed to achieving several key objectives. These include the gradual elimination of plastic waste from drainage channels to mitigate flood risks, the creation of employment opportunities for local youth as collection agents and drivers, and the valorization of collected plastics through efficient recycling processes.
The project also places a strong emphasis on community awareness. Collection agents are tasked with engaging residents, encouraging them to adopt proper waste sorting habits, and cultivating a community-wide culture of cleanliness within the commune.
The launch ceremony was highlighted by a ribbon-cutting event, formally marking the operational start of the ECO BOX project. This was followed by the ceremonial handover of keys for the inaugural collection tricycle to one of the agents who will be responsible for traversing the streets of Treichville to gather plastic waste.
