Dangote’s strategic pivot to Cameroon’s oil landscape

Nigerian industrial giant Dangote Group is advancing plans to enter Cameroon’s oil sector, with a particular focus on petroleum product storage and transportation infrastructure. This initiative follows high-level discussions in Yaoundé between Cameroon’s Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute and a Dangote delegation led by Devakumar Edwin, the conglomerate’s Vice President for Oil and Gas.

The meetings laid bare Dangote’s strategic vision for Cameroon, where the company already operates a major cement plant in Douala. Edwin outlined plans to expand the group’s footprint by investing in critical oil infrastructure, responding to the nation’s growing energy needs while aligning with Cameroon’s long-term economic development goals.

Cement expansion continues alongside oil ambitions

Dangote’s ambitions in Cameroon extend beyond oil. In parallel with its petroleum sector plans, the group is doubling down on its cement operations in the country. This expansion is set against a backdrop of robust construction activity and the urgent need to secure reliable fuel supply chains for both industrial and consumer markets.

The company’s existing cement facility in Douala has been a cornerstone of its African operations, and doubling its production capacity will further solidify Dangote’s position as a key industrial partner in Cameroon’s economic transformation.

Sonara’s critical role in Cameroon’s energy future

The timing of Dangote’s oil sector investment coincides with a pivotal moment for Cameroon’s sole refinery, the National Refining Company (Sonara). Ravaged by a catastrophic fire in May 2019, Sonara has been operating at reduced capacity while undergoing a comprehensive restructuring to restore full operations.

Dangote’s entry into Cameroon’s oil sector presents both an immediate lifeline and a strategic challenge for Sonara. The government is pursuing a delicate balancing act: leveraging Dangote’s financial and technical resources to stabilize the fuel market in the short term, while simultaneously advancing Sonara’s ambitious 700 billion FCFA rehabilitation and modernization project to restore the refinery’s operational independence.

A partnership with long-term implications

The proposed collaboration between Dangote and Sonara is more than a business transaction—it represents a strategic partnership designed to ensure Cameroon’s energy security. By integrating Dangote’s infrastructure with Sonara’s refinery capabilities, the government aims to create a resilient, diversified energy ecosystem capable of meeting the nation’s growing demands.

This partnership could set a precedent for future industrial collaborations in Central Africa, demonstrating how regional integration can drive economic resilience and energy independence.
