DR Congo Alerts the UN on the Links Between Natural Resources and Armed Conflicts
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has warned the United Nations that there is a strong link between natural resources and armed conflicts in the region.
The DRC’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, made this statement before the UN Security Council, emphasizing that it was not about creating new international obligations, but rather about better articulating existing mechanisms for tracing, sanctions, or governance of natural resources.
She also stressed that this reflection did not aim to create a global mining code, nor challenge the sovereignty of states over their natural resources.
