German ambassador meets Douala archbishop to discuss papal visit

The German Ambassador to Cameroon, Christian Sedat, paid a courtesy visit to the Archbishop of Douala, Mgr Samuel Kleda, on Monday, June 30, 2026. The meeting focused on the recent papal visit to Cameroon and the role of religious leaders in society.
The ambassador was welcomed at the archbishop’s residence and later toured the Saint Peter and Paul Cathedral, celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. According to the German Embassy in Cameroon, the visit highlighted the strong ties between Germany, Cameroon, and the Catholic Church.
Strengthening German-Cameroonian relations
In a statement on social media, the German Embassy emphasized the importance of dialogue and cooperation with religious leaders in Cameroon. “During his visit to Douala, Ambassador Christian Sedat met with His Excellency Mgr Samuel Kleda, Archbishop of Douala, for an open and enriching exchange on the role of religious leaders in society, particularly in light of the historic papal visit to Cameroon. This meeting also underscores the strong ties between Germany, Cameroon, and the Catholic Church. Germany remains present on the ground, listening and engaging in dialogue across the country.”
Christian Sedat has served as Germany’s Ambassador to Cameroon since July 2025, bringing extensive diplomatic experience from his previous roles, including as Ambassador to Juba, South Sudan (2023–2025), and as Deputy Head of Mission in Nouakchott, Mauritania (2005–2008).
Promoting social and cultural cooperation
Since assuming his position in Yaoundé, Ambassador Sedat has been actively involved in strengthening German-Cameroonian cooperation. His work focuses on enhancing economic ties, development cooperation, and addressing sensitive cultural issues, including colonial-era cultural property. He also supports local social initiatives, such as public health micro-projects.
