Human rights group urges President Tshisekedi to calm political tensions in DRC

As the debate over a potential constitutional reform intensifies in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, tensions continue to rise, prompting the Voix des sans voix (VSV) to issue a strong appeal to President Félix Tshisekedi to take decisive action.

The human rights organization, headquartered in Kinshasa, has warned that the current climate—already fragile due to persistent insecurity in the eastern regions—could deteriorate further if immediate steps are not taken to de-escalate the situation.

President’s pivotal role in national unity

The VSV emphasized that President Félix Tshisekedi holds a unique position to foster cohesion and restore calm across the nation. In a statement released on June 24, the group highlighted the critical need for leadership that prioritizes national interest over partisan or regional divisions.

“The President must act swiftly to prevent the current political discourse from spiraling into deeper unrest,” the VSV declared. The organization called on political leaders to refrain from inflammatory rhetoric and instead promote messages of unity and solidarity among the Congolese people.

Averting human rights violations in a fragile climate

The VSV cautioned that unchecked political tensions could lead to widespread human rights abuses, particularly in a context where security challenges already strain the country’s stability. The eastern regions, plagued by ongoing conflicts, remain a flashpoint that demands urgent attention.

“No political, ethnic, or regional affiliation should overshadow the collective well-being of the nation,” the organization stated. It urged all stakeholders to uphold democratic principles and respect fundamental freedoms, stressing that stability hinges on responsible leadership and constructive dialogue.

Strengthening democracy through responsible leadership

The VSV’s call comes at a time when the DRC faces multiple challenges, from constitutional debates to regional instability. The group underscored that President Tshisekedi’s intervention could serve as a catalyst for restoring trust and preventing further polarization.

“The President’s role is not just symbolic; it is essential in guiding the nation through this critical period,” the VSV noted. It urged all political actors to embrace restraint and prioritize the nation’s long-term stability over short-term political gains.
