In a significant development for Sahel politics, Sunni cleric Mohamad Ishaq Kindo was apprehended by security forces in Ouagadougou on Tuesday. His arrest follows days after he publicly voiced strong criticisms against a proposed bill concerning religious freedoms in Burkina Faso. This incident has ignited considerable tension and prompted demonstrations within the Burkinabè capital.
Tense arrest operation in Ouagadougou
Sources close to Imam Mohamad Ishaq Kindo, along with statements from the Federation of Islamic Associations of Burkina, confirm his arrest on Tuesday afternoon. The operation involved masked police and military personnel. Occurring just before the Muslim holiday of Eid, the apprehension led to confrontations between security forces and worshippers present at the scene. Associates of the imam reported multiple injuries sustained during the arrest. The current whereabouts of the religious leader remain undisclosed.
Criticism of a proposed law
Just two days prior to his detention, an audio recording widely circulated across social media platforms captured the imam’s strong disapproval of a legislative proposal. This bill, enacted in March, aims to regulate the exercise of religious freedoms within Burkina Faso. In his sermon, Mohamad Ishaq Kindo issued a clear warning to the authorities against any potential measures to prohibit public prayers. He also urged the nation’s leaders to “reflect more deeply on the implications of their actions before proceeding.”
Protest dispersed by security forces
Hours after the arrest, hundreds of individuals gathered in Ouagadougou, demanding the immediate release of the influential imam. Eyewitnesses described security forces employing tear gas to disperse the demonstration. In response to the escalating situation, the Federation of Islamic Associations of Burkina appealed to Muslim faithful for “calm, restraint, and serenity.”
