Former allies of Bah N’Daw stand trial in Mali’s ongoing political saga
Six years into Mali’s transitional period, a high-profile case involving close associates of former transition president Bah N’Daw has reached a critical stage. The defendants, including military and civilian figures, are facing charges of attempted conspiracy against the government in a trial that resumes today at the Bamako Court of Appeal’s criminal chambers.
The accused include Colonel Kassoum Goïta, former director of State Security, and Kalilou Doumbia, ex-secretary general of the presidency. Both have been held in detention since 2021. The group comprises three civilians and three military personnel, though authorities have not disclosed the specific details of the alleged plot.
During the initial transition phase (August 2020 to May 2021), Kalilou Doumbia served as secretary general of the presidency, while Colonel Kassoum Goïta—unrelated to current transitional president General Assimi Goïta—led Mali’s intelligence services. The remaining defendants include a State Security warrant officer, a police commissioner, a businessman, and a traditional healer.
Legal battles expose tensions in Mali’s transition
The defense has consistently argued that the proceedings are politically motivated, targeting individuals simply for their association with Bah N’Daw, who was ousted in the May 2021 coup. In a 2022 ruling, a judge dismissed charges against Kalilou Doumbia and Moustapha Diakité, a former Kayes police commissioner, yet both remained in detention. By January 2023, the Court of Appeal ordered their trial, and since then, all requests for provisional release have been denied.
The defendants, who maintain their innocence, are expected to appear in court to refute the allegations. Their legal team insists the trial must establish the truth and clear their clients’ names. Meanwhile, in December 2021, they filed a complaint against General Modibo Koné, current director of State Security, over alleged misconduct during arrests—though no judicial follow-up has occurred.
What’s at stake in Mali’s transitional justice
This case underscores broader questions about accountability and political maneuvering in Mali’s post-coup landscape. As the trial unfolds, observers are watching whether the proceedings will address lingering grievances or deepen divisions within the transitional framework.
