Mauritania seeks Gabon’s backing for OIF leadership bid

The Gabonese Republic and the Islamic Republic of Mauritania share robust bilateral ties rooted in mutual respect and sustained cooperation. This partnership was further strengthened during a high-level meeting in Libreville, where President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema received Ms. Messouda Bahama Mohamed Laghdaf, a special envoy dispatched by Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.

Ms. Laghdaf conveyed a formal message from her government, emphasizing Mauritania’s eagerness to deepen collaborative efforts with Gabon. The two nations have long maintained a relationship built on solidarity, shared values, and ongoing dialogue on regional priorities. The envoy took the opportunity to formally present Mauritania’s bid for the Secretary-General position at the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF).

The Mauritanian candidacy, championed by Dr. Koumba Ba, outlines a strategic vision centered on three core pillars: coherence, balance, and direct utility to member states. During the discussion, both leaders underscored the strength and fluidity of diplomatic relations between Nouakchott and Libreville. President Oligui Nguema reaffirmed Gabon’s commitment to consensus-based governance and inclusive decision-making, principles that guide the country’s continental engagements.

This meeting exemplifies Gabon’s proactive diplomatic approach, highlighting its dedication to expanding African partnerships while advancing a Francophonie that is proactive, development-focused, and aligned with the collective aspirations of member states.
