Niger adopts digital payments for vaccination campaigns to boost efficiency

Niger embraces digital payments for vaccination campaigns

During the April 2026 National Polio Vaccination Days in Niger, the Niamey region implemented a groundbreaking digital payment system for health workers and community volunteers, backed by the World Health Organization (WHO). Over 1,200 participants received their compensation via mobile transfers—a significant shift from traditional cash payments.

The transition to mobile payments streamlined the process, with 99% of transactions completed within 48 hours post-campaign. This innovation enhanced transaction traceability, reduced payment delays, and minimized logistical challenges tied to cash management. Initial hurdles, such as data accuracy and digital tool adoption, were swiftly addressed through targeted support from WHO Niger.

building capacity for a digital payment ecosystem

The success of this initiative stems from comprehensive preparatory work. From September 29 to October 3, 2025, WHO Niger organized a digital payment training workshop for national and local vaccination stakeholders. Led by experts from the WHO Regional Office for Africa, the session equipped the Ministry of Public Health and Hygiene with the tools to design and implement a nationwide digital payment framework.

key benefits of digital payments in public health

Digital payments proved to be a game-changer for vaccination campaigns, offering:

  • Faster transactions: Eliminating delays associated with cash processing.
  • Enhanced transparency: Every transaction is fully traceable, reducing risks of mismanagement.
  • Improved accountability: Clear records ensure funds are used as intended.
  • Motivated workforce: Health workers benefit from reliable, timely compensation.

With promising results in Niamey, this model is poised for national expansion, potentially transforming other public health initiatives across Niger. The initiative underscores WHO Niger’s commitment to delivering measurable, on-the-ground impact.
