Ousmane Sonko speaks out on government changes and presidential communication

Following his departure from the government and the subsequent formation of a new cabinet that notably excluded representatives from his party, PASTEF, Ousmane Sonko has finally broken his silence on recent events in Senegal.

Addressing the press, Sonko delivered a series of pointed remarks, primarily directed at President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Despite the critical tone, he was careful to emphasize that the current disagreements should not be misconstrued as a personal rift between the two prominent political figures.

Reflecting on their working relationship, Sonko specifically expressed disappointment regarding a perceived lack of dialogue with the head of state.

“The President declined to engage in discussions with me at a time when he was conversing with other individuals,” Sonko stated, highlighting his concern over the communication breakdown.

Discussing PASTEF’s exclusion from the recently appointed government, the former Prime Minister underscored the long-standing political alliance and shared objectives that once bound the two factions in Senegal’s political landscape.

He asserted, “Let no one depart; let the President remain on his side, and we on ours,” signaling a clear demarcation while acknowledging distinct roles.

Despite the visible tensions, the PASTEF leader assured the public that his interactions with Bassirou Diomaye Faye have never escalated into direct, harsh confrontations.

“We have never spoken harshly to each other face-to-face,” he maintained, emphasizing a certain level of mutual respect despite disagreements.

Adopting a tone that blended critique with a call for collective focus, Sonko clarified that his political movement does not perceive itself as an adversary to the President of the Republic.

“We are not President Diomaye’s adversaries. The soaring cost of living, transportation challenges, and the daily concerns of the Senegalese people are the true adversaries we face,” he declared. Sonko further suggested that opposition factions might be attempting to capitalize on the current divergences within the executive branch.

These significant statements emerge amidst a period of governmental reorganization, fueling considerable speculation regarding the future trajectory of relations between Ousmane Sonko, his PASTEF party, and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye within Senegal’s political landscape.
