In 2024, a trace amount of meldonium—an otherwise banned substance—was detected in a routine doping test conducted on Mykhailo Mudryk. The Ukrainian winger was subsequently handed a four-year suspension. Mudryk appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). However, under the latest World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) guidelines, a comparable finding today would not trigger any disciplinary measures.

“Regulations have since evolved,” confirmed the Football Association in an official statement. “While the case cannot be reassessed retroactively, the test result that led to Mudryk’s suspension would no longer be deemed a violation under today’s standards. The trace levels of meldonium detected in his sample would not have been flagged, meaning no anti-doping rule breach would have occurred.”

“Given these changes and additional contextual factors, the FA and Mudryk have reached a mutual resolution, endorsed by WADA.“

As part of this agreement, Mudryk admitted to breaching anti-doping protocols and accepted a suspension that he has now fully served. With the ban lifted, he is free to resume competitive action immediately.
