Shelter in crisis: living conditions in Mopti
A displaced resident described the harsh realities of life in Mopti, where he and hundreds of others have been housed in a local school. «When we arrived, we were given essential supplies—rice, tea, sugar, oil, and powdered milk,» he recalled with gratitude. The aid, organized by local authorities and anonymous donors, has provided temporary relief. Yet, the conditions remain far from adequate.
The school, now sheltering over 400 people, offers little comfort. «Sleeping outdoors in the courtyard or crammed into classrooms during rainstorms is unbearable,» he explained. While food is available, the lack of proper living conditions underscores the urgent need for sustainable solutions.
Loss and longing: the human toll of displacement
The evacuation from Kouakourou was not a choice but a necessity. Armed groups had issued a deadline, leaving residents with no option but to flee. «Leaving everything behind—our homes, our crops, our phones—was devastating,» another displaced person shared. The timing of the exodus could not have been worse. Many were preparing for the farming season, a critical period for survival in the Sahel. Now, their agricultural plans lie in ruins, compounding their hardship.
«Our greatest hope is to return home,» he emphasized. The desire to rebuild their lives on familiar soil is a driving force, but the path forward remains uncertain. With no immediate resolution in sight, the displaced families of Kouakourou face an uncertain future, caught between survival and the longing for a lost way of life.
