Ousmane Sonko warns of government collapse amid political standoff

Dakar — Political tensions in Sénégal have escalated as opposition leader Ousmane Sonko, head of the Pastef party, issues a bold statement about his party’s ability to destabilize the government.

In a press interaction following the formation of the latest cabinet, Sonko declared that his party holds significant leverage over the executive branch. « We control the National Assembly and could bring down the government tomorrow if we chose to, » he asserted, signaling a high-stakes political confrontation.

The opposition figure emphasized that his party’s parliamentary majority could repeat such a move repeatedly, highlighting the deepening rift between former allies. Yet despite this show of force, Sonko insisted he does not seek to plunge the nation into chaos. « We are not looking to paralyze the country, » he stated, while reaffirming his commitment to advancing Pastef’s long-term political vision beyond the 2029 presidential election.

The leader of Pastef clarified that he does not intend to weaponize the National Assembly against President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. However, he accused the presidential camp of initiating institutional hostilities, particularly through legal challenges brought before the Constitutional Council.

Sonko also defended his strategic decision during last year’s legislative elections, where Pastef ran independently rather than in a coalition. He argued that this approach has preserved the party’s autonomy and its influence over the parliamentary majority, allowing it to operate with greater flexibility.

In a defiant tone, Sonko maintained that he remains a target of systemic efforts to weaken his political standing. Yet he expressed unwavering confidence that these maneuvers will ultimately fail, reinforcing his resolve to push forward with Pastef’s political agenda.
