Ousmane Sonko’s party rejects participation in Senegal’s new government

Barely a week after his removal from the Prime Minister’s office and the appointment of a new head of government in Senegal, tensions between Ousmane Sonko and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye have intensified. Initial negotiations were underway to explore the possibility of party cadres from Pastef-Les Patriotes joining the new executive. However, these talks collapsed, as officially confirmed by the party’s Executive Committee (COMEX) in a statement released on June 1 and shared by Sonko on his Facebook page.

The communiqué firmly states that no representatives of Pastef will be part of the incoming administration. Over recent days, party leaders engaged in multiple discussions with the Head of State to reach a consensus on the government’s composition. While the party emphasized acting « in a spirit of responsibility » and aligning with its governing bodies’ directives, a lengthy meeting between Faye and Sonko on the morning of June 1 failed to bridge key disagreements.

Ongoing disputes over executive power structure

Following the inconclusive meeting, the COMEX reviewed the situation and proposed fresh terms to the President. These proposals were ultimately rejected, prompting the party to withdraw entirely from the government formation process. The official statement declared, « Pastef-Les Patriotes will not participate in the next government, nor will it be represented by any minister. »

The decision carries significant political implications for Senegal, arriving at a time when citizens are demanding urgent solutions to pressing economic and social challenges. Despite the breakdown in talks, the party extended wishes of « full success to the new team », signaling its intention to continue operating from the National Assembly, where Sonko now serves as President. The coming days will reveal the broader impact of this latest political development at the highest levels of the Senegalese state.
