Police officer opens fire on two colleagues in N’Djamena, Chad

A scene of extraordinary violence unfolded around 5 PM near the Goudjé Barrière roundabout in N’Djamena, Chad. The incident occurred as traffic police officers were actively directing vehicles to alleviate significant congestion on the city’s thoroughfares.

Initial reports indicate that the driver of a Toyota Corolla, equipped with tinted windows, attempted to disregard the traffic control directives and force his way through the regulated area. A traffic brigade officer intervened, endeavoring to enforce the regulations and reason with the driver, which quickly escalated into a heated altercation.

The individual, later identified as an active police officer, though currently unassigned from his previous post at the 3rd arrondissement police station, then brandished a pistol. He reportedly fired a warning shot into the air before discharging his weapon directly at the officers. Two agents sustained gunshot wounds, one of whom was struck in the ear. Fortunately, according to police assessments, their injuries are not considered life-threatening.

During the confrontation, officers successfully subdued the assailant and secured his firearm. However, before he was fully neutralized, the attacker also inflicted a knife wound to the forehead of another police officer, right in front of the Goudjé Barrière roundabout.

The injured police personnel received immediate medical attention, being swiftly transported to a healthcare facility. While their condition remains under close observation, initial reports offer reassurance regarding the recovery of those who sustained bullet wounds.

The aggressor was promptly handcuffed and taken into custody at the Police Secours headquarters, under the General Directorate of Police. Several officers present during the incident suggested that the individual appeared to be in a state of intoxication at the time of the attack.

An official investigation is now underway to thoroughly determine the precise circumstances surrounding this disturbing attack, which has understandably caused considerable alarm among both commuters and law enforcement officers present at the scene.
