Lfp rejects ol’s request for ligue 1 opener postponement

Olympique Lyonnais’ ambition to secure a spot in the prestigious Champions League group stage faces a tight schedule, as their path requires navigating a demanding series of qualifying matches. To reach Europe’s elite club competition, Lyon must first overcome the third preliminary round, with fixtures slated for August 4th or 5th (first leg) and August 11th or 12th (return leg). Should they advance, the ultimate hurdle will be the play-off round, featuring an initial match on August 18th or 19th and the decisive second leg on August 25th or 26th.

A significant scheduling conflict arises with the kickoff of the Ligue 1 season. The opening weekend’s fixtures are set for August 22nd, placing OL’s inaugural league encounter precisely between the two legs of the Champions League play-offs. This tight turnaround prompted Lyon to formally request a postponement of their away game against Toulouse, believing that a less congested calendar would significantly enhance their prospects of qualifying for the Champions League.

Lyon’s management also underscored the broader advantages of their potential Champions League participation, arguing that an Olympique Lyonnais presence in Europe’s premier competition would yield substantial benefits for French football as a whole, boosting its profile and financial standing.

However, during its meeting this Monday, the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) ultimately rejected OL’s plea. The governing body cited concerns about commencing the Ligue 1 season with a rescheduled fixture, particularly as the entire championship is set to be broadcast on its new dedicated platform, emphasizing the desire for a smooth and consistent start.

Consequently, unless there are unforeseen alterations to the fixture list, Olympique Lyonnais, should they reach the Champions League play-offs, will face a gruelling week. Their itinerary would include a European fixture, followed by an away trip to Toulouse in Ligue 1, and then the critical return leg of their European play-off, all within a compressed timeframe.
