Serigne Habib Sy officially announced his membership with Pastef during a significant meeting with Ousmane Sonko in Diaksao. He clearly articulated his intention to acquire a party membership card, thereby making a public declaration of support for the party led by Sonko.
Ahead of Tivaouane’s annual Mawlid celebration, Ousmane Sonko, who serves as the President of the National Assembly and leader of Pastef, visited Diaksao as part of his customary engagements with religious figures. During this visit, Serigne Habib Sy welcomed him and seized the opportunity to openly affirm his affiliation with the current ruling party.
Directly addressing his distinguished guest, the esteemed religious leader unequivocally expressed his desire to formalize his allegiance to Pastef. “I am a member of Pastef. I plan to purchase a membership card very soon. However, I am unsure how to complete the membership process via the online platform,” Serigne Habib Sy stated. In response, Ousmane Sonko pledged to streamline this process, assuring him, “I will personally bring you your membership card.”
This public endorsement by Serigne Habib Sy aligns with his history of civic engagement. Notably, the son of the late Mame Abdou Aziz Sy Dabakh had previously joined the “Y en a marre” movement in February 2021. Several years later, he now openly declares his association with Pastef and confirms his intention to become a formally recognized member of the party.
