Ousmane Sonko remains at the helm of Senegal’s National Assembly after the Constitutional Council dismissed opposition challenges to his election. The court ruled it lacked jurisdiction to review the case, closing the door on further legal recourse.
The decision follows Sonko’s swift political rebound after President Bassirou Diomaye Faye removed him as Prime Minister in late May. Following his dismissal, Sonko returned to his parliamentary seat and secured the Assembly’s presidency, reinforcing his grip on the legislative branch.
His confirmation at the top of Senegal’s lawmaking body is more than a procedural victory—it reshapes the political landscape. Once united under the same banner, Sonko and Faye now stand on opposing sides of critical debates, particularly around economic policies and fiscal governance. Their rift signals a new chapter in Senegal’s political saga, one where alliances shift and power dynamics realign.
