Senegal’s parliament speaker urges deep reforms for African parliamentary union

Ousmane Sonko pushes for stronger African parliamentary cooperation

The 85th session of the Executive Committee of the African Parliamentary Union (APU) saw a pivotal meeting between Ousmane Sonko, President of Senegal’s National Assembly, and Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde Kyenge, Chair of the Union’s Executive Committee. Held on June 4, the discussions centered on strengthening the organization’s role in addressing Africa’s pressing political, economic, and security challenges.

During the exchange, Sonko emphasized the urgent need to enhance the African Parliamentary Union’s effectiveness. He outlined key reform proposals aimed at modernizing the institution’s operations and increasing its influence in shaping the continent’s major political and institutional directions.

Harmonizing continental policies for greater impact

Sonko stressed the importance of better alignment between the African Parliamentary Union’s recommendations and the decisions made by the African Union. He argued that stronger coordination between the two bodies would enhance policy coherence across Africa and amplify the effectiveness of development initiatives on the continent.

The meeting reflects a broader trend among African leaders to reinforce parliamentary cooperation mechanisms and foster more efficient continental governance—priorities aimed at serving the diverse needs of African populations.
