Senegal’s presidency denies secret pact claims as pastef congress looms

With the PASTEF party’s congress just two days away, Presidential Advisor Aldiouma Sow took a bold stance to address Ousmane Sonko’s recent remarks. In a firm rebuttal, Sow defended President Bassirou Diomaye Faye against allegations of a supposed ‘secret pact’ formed during his detention at Cap Manuel.

According to Sow, the Head of State never engaged in any covert agreements while in prison. He emphasized that Bassirou Diomaye Faye remained steadfast in his political convictions and unwavering commitment throughout the 2024 transition process.

The advisor also dismissed claims that the President participated in any effort to undermine Senegalese voters’ sovereign right to choose their leader. ‘He has not been part of any scheme to hijack the people’s democratic will,’ Sow declared.

Sow went on to highlight the President’s vision of political dialogue, describing it not as a situational tool or tactical maneuver to manipulate power dynamics, but as a core principle shaping his governance and institutional decisions.

This intervention comes at a pivotal moment, as internal discussions intensify within the PASTEF majority and among its supporters ahead of the highly anticipated party congress. Sow’s remarks reignite debates about the relationship between Senegal’s top executive figures and the future direction of the government.
