Political shake-up in Sénégal as president Faye dismisses Ousmane Sonko
In a significant political move that has sent shockwaves through the nation, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has officially terminated the duties of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. The decision, announced late Friday evening via a presidential decree, also signaled the end of the current government’s mandate.
End of a political partnership
This dismissal marks a dramatic turning point in the relationship between the two leaders. Ousmane Sonko, who was widely regarded as the mentor and a key architect of the current administration’s rise to power, had been serving as the head of government since the new leadership took office. However, the atmosphere at the Palais de la République has been increasingly strained over the past few months.
Persistent disagreements and rising internal friction between President Faye and his Prime Minister have been palpable in recent weeks. These tensions culminated in the Friday night decree, effectively dissolving the cabinet and ending Sonko‘s tenure at the Petit Palais.
A period of transition
The move follows a series of significant political maneuvers in Sénégal, including the recent dissolution of the National Assembly. With new legislative elections scheduled for November 17, the country is entering a high-stakes period of administrative reshuffling. The departure of the Sonko-led government leaves the executive branch in a state of transition as the nation awaits the appointment of a new cabinet to steer the country toward the upcoming polls.
