Sonko meets Dakar archbishop ahead of Popenguine 2026 pilgrimage

With the 138th edition of the Popenguine Marian Pilgrimage just around the corner, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko paid a courtesy visit to the Cathedral of Our Lady of Victories in Dakar. The meeting was held in a warm and respectful atmosphere, as the head of government was welcomed by the city’s archbishop, Monseigneur André Guèye.

Accompanying the Prime Minister were Marie Rose Faye, the government spokesperson, and Béatrice Germaine Faye, a member of parliament. Their discussion centered on social harmony, national cohesion, and interfaith dialogue, all critical themes as preparations for the upcoming religious gathering intensify.

Ousmane Sonko underscored the government’s commitment to the values of peaceful coexistence, tolerance, and social cohesion that define Senegal’s unique identity. He also highlighted the essential role religious leaders play in maintaining national stability and unity.

In response, Monseigneur André Guèye conveyed his satisfaction with the visit and offered prayers for national peace, unity, and the successful implementation of initiatives aimed at advancing the country’s development.

This meeting comes at a time of growing anticipation as the Popenguine Marian Pilgrimage—one of Senegal’s largest religious gatherings—draws near.
