Togo-US talks focus on local governance and decentralization progress

The strengthening of cooperation between Togo and the United States in local governance, decentralization, and social cohesion took center stage during a meeting between the Minister of Territorial Administration, Local Governance, and Customary Affairs and Kimberly M. McClure, Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Togo.

During the courtesy visit in Lomé on June 2, 2026, the American diplomat engaged in discussions with the Togolese minister on shared priorities, particularly in territorial governance and local development. The talks covered key themes such as the progress of Togo’s decentralization process, capacity-building for local authorities, and strategies to enhance social cohesion by involving traditional leadership and community actors.

The Togolese minister outlined the country’s administrative structure and highlighted government reforms aimed at boosting public service efficiency at the local level. These efforts seek to bring state services closer to citizens and foster inclusive development.

Kimberly M. McClure reaffirmed the U.S. Embassy’s commitment to supporting local governance dynamics in Togo. She emphasized Washington’s eagerness to better grasp the challenges of decentralization to more effectively back ongoing initiatives in this area.

The discussions also touched on regional security concerns, with both parties stressing the need to sustain joint efforts for lasting peace, stability, and sustainable development in West Africa. The meeting underscored the strong partnership between Togo and the United States, reflecting their shared dedication to advancing effective local governance and inclusive growth for the benefit of all citizens.
