Togo’s Faure Gnassingbé attends Museveni’s inauguration in Kampala

Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé paid an official visit to Kampala, Uganda, on May 12, 2026, to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Yoweri Museveni, who was re-elected in the January 15 general election. The Ugandan leader began his new term in office under the theme “Securing progress and advancing toward upper-middle-income status.”

High-profile dignitaries from across Africa, as well as European, Asian and American delegations, gathered for the event. Faure Gnassingbé extended his congratulations to Museveni and expressed wishes for success in his new five-year mandate. In response, the Ugandan president praised the Togolese leader’s attendance, highlighting it as a symbol of the strong ties between Kampala and Lomé.

During bilateral discussions, both leaders addressed regional security challenges, particularly in the Great Lakes area. As African Union mediator for the crisis in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gnassingbé reiterated his commitment to continued dialogue with regional stakeholders to achieve a lasting resolution.
