Women’s can 2026: Burkina Faso and Mali battle to draw in Ouagadougou

The Burkina Faso women’s national football team concluded another round of friendly matches ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (CAN). After a scoreless draw, the Stallions and the Eagles shared the spoils once more with a 2-2 result on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at the Stade du 4 Août in Ouagadougou.

The Malian side struck first in the encounter. In the 10th minute, striker Fatoumata Diarra broke the deadlock for the Eagles, putting them ahead 0-1. The Stallions remained composed, gradually regaining control of the game. Their technical superiority became evident as they dominated possession and stretched the Malian defense.

A rebound off the crossbar presented an opportunity for Deborah Guira, who slotted home the equalizer (1-1). The deadlock was restored, setting the stage for an intense second half.

Despite Mali’s attacking prowess, Burkina Faso asserted their dominance. A well-executed move culminated in Judicaëlle Ouoba drilling the ball into the top corner past the helpless Malian goalkeeper. The Stallions took a 2-1 lead into halftime, a result of their disciplined and strategic play.

A late comeback from Mali

In the second half, Burkina Faso maintained possession but struggled to break down Mali’s resolute defensive structure. The Eagles, meanwhile, pressed forward in search of an equalizer but found Burkina Faso’s backline impenetrable.

The deadlock was finally shattered in the 78th minute when referee awarded a penalty to Mali. Aissata Traoré coolly dispatched the spot-kick, restoring parity at 2-2. The final whistle confirmed the draw, with neither side able to find a winner despite late attempts.

This was the second meeting between the two teams in as many weeks, with their first clash ending in a goalless draw. These friendlies serve as critical preparation for the 2026 Women’s CAN, scheduled to take place in Morocco from July 25 to August 16, 2026.

The Stallions have been placed in Group B alongside Côte d’Ivoire, Tanzania, and South Africa. Meanwhile, the Eagles will face Ghana, Cape Verde, and Cameroon in Group C. Both teams are sharpening their tactics and chemistry ahead of the continental showpiece.
