The national carrier Air Sénégal has officially taken delivery of a brand-new Boeing 737-800, named “Gorée.” This major fleet expansion represents a significant leap forward in securing the country’s aerial sovereignty. The aircraft was formally welcomed in Dakar on 7 September 2026, marking a pivotal moment for national aviation.
A strategic investment for national development
This key acquisition was made possible through the robust financial backing of the government of Sénégal, facilitated by the Ministry of Land and Air Transports under the leadership of Abdoul Ahad Ndiaye. Driven by the strategic vision of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, this investment aims to provide the nation with a world-class airline capable of matching its economic, international, and tourism ambitions.
Modern specifications and passenger comfort
The new single-aisle aircraft belongs to the highly versatile Boeing 737 NG family, perfectly suited for short and medium-haul routes. It features a dual-class configuration designed to optimize operational capacity. The cabin accommodates 174 passengers in total, offering 12 business class seats and 162 economy seats, all equipped with ergonomic Recaro seating. Physically, the aircraft spans 39.5 meters in length with a wingspan of 35.8 meters, and it is outfitted with three restrooms and three galleys.
The symbolic heritage of Gorée
Naming the aircraft “Gorée” holds profound cultural significance. The island of Gorée, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1978, stands as a global monument to the memory of the transatlantic slave trade, resilience, and intercultural dialogue. By choosing this name, Air Sénégal turns the plane into a flying ambassador, carrying the country’s history, global outreach, and connection with its diaspora across international skies.
Driving economic growth and tourism
Beyond its symbolic value, this addition to the fleet is set to play a crucial role in boosting the tourism sector of Sénégal. By streamlining the arrival of international visitors and strengthening ties with both regional and global markets, the airline aims to achieve several key milestones. These include increasing operational capacity, supporting long-term growth, securing national aviation independence, and elevating the quality of service for all travellers.
