A major fire has broken out at the main market in Kpalimé, known as the Château market, in the commune of Kloto 1. The blaze started in the night from Sunday 6 September to Monday 7 September 2026, causing substantial material destruction but, fortunately, no human casualties.
How the fire spread
The flames ignited shortly after midnight in the market’s relocation zone. Because of the wooden structures and highly flammable materials present, the fire quickly jumped to neighbouring stalls and shelters.
Once the alarm was raised, firefighters arrived at the scene, supported by local police and the National Civil Protection Agency (ANPC). Their efforts managed to contain the fire during the night, preventing it from sweeping through the entire commercial complex.
Damage assessment and initial findings
According to the first evaluations carried out by the emergency services:
- Human toll: No lives were lost and no injuries have been reported.
- Material damage: Several shelters were destroyed. Large stocks of food products, textiles, and various equipment belonging to traders were burnt.
Investigation and next steps
The local authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire. The ANPC and municipal services are continuing to register the affected traders and to assess precisely the financial losses suffered by the market vendors.
