A financial injection of nearly 30 billion West African CFA francs has been earmarked to support students from primary classrooms to university lecture halls as the country gears up for the 2026-2027 academic year.
Expanding school feeding programs to reach half a million more children
The iconic school feeding initiative is set to undergo a significant expansion, now guaranteeing daily hot meals to an additional 500,000 pupils. This brings the total number of children benefiting from the program to 1.9 million, with a particular focus on rural and peri-urban areas where food insecurity is most acute. The initiative is part of a broader emergency plan to bolster educational continuity in border regions grappling with security challenges, including targeted infrastructure upgrades and enhanced support for teachers and learners.
Secondary and technical education: Breaking down gender barriers and upgrading facilities
The secondary and technical education sectors are receiving a major boost through two key initiatives. Firstly, tuition fees are being fully waived for all female students enrolled in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs, a move designed to close the gender gap and empower young women. Secondly, 12,000 new student desks are being distributed to General Education Colleges (CEG) to accommodate rising enrollment, alongside the targeted rehabilitation of girls’ high schools nationwide.
Higher education: Boosting student welfare and campus infrastructure
The university sector is set to benefit from a series of financial adjustments aimed at easing the financial burden on students. Scholarship allocations are being increased by up to 49% depending on the field of study, complemented by higher back-to-school allowances and adjusted excellence grants for those pursuing studies abroad. Mobility is also being enhanced with the deployment of 63 new buses to serve four public universities—Abomey-Calavi, Parakou, UNA Kétou, and UNSTIM Abomey—across intercity routes.
Campus life is getting a much-needed upgrade with the rehabilitation of university restaurants and infirmaries, including the provision of new equipment and qualified staff. Social equity is further reinforced by the automatic award of scholarships to all newly enrolled students with severe disabilities in public universities.

Ministries have been tasked with finalizing all operational arrangements ahead of the official start of the academic year.
