Chadian patriots decry politicized justice system amid opposition crackdown

Chadian opposition leaders condemn manipulated justice system

In a bold move to expose what they call a deliberately skewed legal framework, the political party Les Patriotes held an emergency press conference in N’Djaména’s Bololo district this week. Speaking on behalf of the coalition, spokesperson Hisseine Abdoulaye delivered a sharply worded statement addressing the deteriorating political and security climate in Chad.

Security vacuum fuels instability across Chad

The party drew urgent attention to the escalating violence gripping multiple regions. In the Lake Chad basin, relentless attacks by Boko Haram continue to strain the national armed forces, while intercommunal clashes in the east—particularly in the Wadi Fira region—have left dozens dead in recent months. According to the Patriotes, these recurring crises reveal critical flaws in the national security apparatus and deepen public anxiety.

Political repression targets critical voices

Les Patriotes accused authorities of orchestrating a systemic crackdown on dissent, citing the arrest of prominent opposition figure Succès Masra, the controversial killing of activist Yaya Dillo, and most recently, the harsh sentencing of eight political leaders from the Groupe de concertation des acteurs politiques (GCAP) to eight years in prison each.

The party condemned the swift and opaque nature of these prosecutions, alleging collusion between the Office of the Prosecutor General, the Ministry of Territorial Administration, and the Supreme Court to systematically silence opposition groups. They described the legal proceedings as a coordinated effort to dismantle the dissolved GCAP coalition through politically motivated charges.

Charges lack credible evidence, party claims

Les Patriotes rejected every accusation levied against the condemned leaders, including allegations of illegal assembly, conspiracy, insurrection, rebellion, and unlawful weapons possession. The party maintained that the prosecution’s case rests on fabricated evidence and insisted that several alleged offenses were entirely fabricated.

A call for global intervention and national unity

The coalition urgently appealed to international observers, human rights defenders, and rule-of-law advocates to intervene and monitor the case closely. Their demands include the immediate and unconditional release of all eight imprisoned leaders and every other political prisoner held across Chad.

In closing, Les Patriotes urged citizens to mobilize peacefully, engage in constructive dialogue, and rally behind national unity to safeguard democracy and prevent further escalation of political and security tensions.
