Congolese leaders accelerate key integration projects

The President of the Democratic Republic of Congo (RDC), Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, concluded a productive working visit to Brazzaville on July 3.

Arriving on board the Majestic River vessel, flying the RDC flag, the head of state navigated the Pool Malebo before being warmly greeted at Brazzaville’s Beach by Congolese Prime Minister, Anatole Collinet Makosso.

This visit underscores the ongoing, dynamic consultations between President Denis Sassou N’Guesso and President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi. Both leaders are firmly committed to deepening bilateral cooperation and expediting the implementation of high-impact economic integration initiatives.

A primary focus of their discussions was the ambitious Brazzaville-Kinshasa road-rail bridge project. This infrastructure is envisioned as one of the most transformative undertakings in the sub-region, poised to connect the world’s two closest capital cities. It aims to significantly enhance the movement of people and goods, thereby boosting commercial exchanges within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (ZLECAf).

The two presidents also reaffirmed their dedication to strengthening their partnership within the energy sector. They are particularly invested in the “Boucle de l’amitié énergétique” (Energy Friendship Loop), a strategic project designed to interconnect the sub-region’s electrical grids. This initiative promises to improve electricity supply and foster sustained economic development across the area.

To advance this vision, an agreement was formally signed to govern the implementation of this vital energy interconnection. A key component of this plan is the development of a mega hydroelectric dam on the Likouala aux Herbes river, boasting an impressive installed capacity of 12,900 megawatts. This monumental project, a joint endeavor by Congo, the RDC, and Angola, seeks to establish Central Africa as a formidable hub for energy production.

Beyond economic considerations, Presidents Denis Sassou N’Guesso and Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi engaged in further consultations regarding the pressing security challenges and stability concerns prevalent in both the Great Lakes region and Central Africa. The leaders reiterated their unwavering commitment to dialogue and reinforced cooperation as indispensable pillars for ensuring peace and propelling the development of both nations and the entire sub-region.
