This Saturday marked the commencement of the Ligue 1 season, with OGC Nice hosting FC Lorient. The opening fixture concluded in a stalemate, as neither side managed to find the back of the net, resulting in a 0-0 draw.

After finishing 16th last season, Les Aiglons were eager to start afresh and reaffirm their rightful place in France’s top flight. This renewed determination was evident in their opening match against FC Lorient, a team that impressed last season under Olivier Pantaloni, who now leads the Nice squad. The encounter was also played in memory of Eric Roy.

For this inaugural game, the Corsican tactician, Pantaloni, deployed his customary 3-4-3 formation. The promising 17-year-old Junior Mandza, who had a strong pre-season, started in defense. In the midfield, Everton Pereira was given the nod ahead of Issiaga Camara. The attacking trio featured Gauthier Hein, alongside Sofian Diop and Zoumana Diallo, with Jonathan Clauss proudly wearing the captain’s armband.

Key Stat: FC Lorient’s last victory on Nice’s home turf dates back to April 2014, when they secured a 2-1 win.

An active start, but lacking precision

Following an initial ten-minute period of assessment, where Lorient appeared more composed, the game began to open up. Théo Le Bris delivered a dangerous cross from the right wing towards Koné, who unfortunately couldn’t connect with the ball. OGC Nice quickly responded; in the 14th minute, Sofiane Diop capitalized on a slip by Kouassi inside the penalty area, unleashing a shot that was parried by Mvogo. This was followed by another sequence of opportunities where shots from Gauthier Hein and Jonathan Clauss were bravely blocked by the Breton defense.

However, Nice could not afford to become complacent. In the 21st minute, Coulibaly lost possession dangerously close to his own box, allowing Makengo to recover the ball and fire just inches wide of the top corner. Yehvann Diouf then made another error in his distribution. Fortunately for him, he redeemed himself with a superb save to deny Bernardeau. Just before halftime, Everton Pereira believed he had broken the deadlock after a deflection from a corner, but the goal was disallowed due to a foul on Cadiou.

We gave ourselves a scare, but that’s our playing style. Up front, we create chances; it’s just about fine-tuning the small details to convert them,” a confident Antoine Mendy commented during his post-match interview.

A less eventful second half

After the half-time break, the match’s momentum noticeably shifted. Both teams appeared to settle into a rhythm that saw fewer clear-cut opportunities. Around the hour mark, Noah Cadiou and then Mamadou Koné tested the Nice goalkeeper in a well-constructed attacking phase, but the shot-stopper held firm.

New striker Nathan Ngoumou, who came on as a substitute, had his moment. In the 83rd minute, he attempted to carve out a shooting angle within the penalty area, but his effort was once again blocked. The final scare for Nice came in stoppage time, when a precise cross allowed Lorient striker Tosin to unleash a powerful header that flew just over Yehvann Diouf’s crossbar, concluding the match without any goals.

For Sofiane Diop, one area for improvement lies in ball distribution, which was often imprecise today: “We must not provide ammunition to our opponents every single weekend.

This result means OGC Nice has now failed to win its opening Ligue 1 match for six consecutive seasons. Next week, Les Niçois will travel to the capital to face Paris FC. That match is scheduled for Sunday, August 30th, at 3 PM.
