Constitutional council’s ruling on Ousmane Sonko’s MP status sparks political reactions

The Constitutional Council has ruled it lacks jurisdiction to address the parliamentary status of Ousmane Sonko, currently Senegal’s second-highest-ranking state official. This decision has triggered sharp responses from the Front for the Defense of Democracy and the Republic (FDR), which views the move as an admission of procedural failure rather than a resolution.

The FDR issued a formal statement declaring that the council’s declaration of incompetence does not alter the perceived illegality of Sonko’s situation. The coalition condemned what it described as a ‘breach of legal and ethical standards,’ urging all citizens to resist this perceived injustice. The FDR emphasized that defending democracy and the public good is not optional but a civic duty.

FDR’s plan to mobilize for democratic change

In its communiqué, the FDR’s Leadership Conference announced its commitment to pursuing all lawful avenues to challenge the current political landscape. The coalition pledged to explore every constitutional mechanism available to construct what it calls a ‘democratic alternative.’ This initiative will rely on broad-based collaboration among political parties, civil society organizations, trade unions, and youth movements.

The FDR’s call to action extends to all segments of society, encouraging the formation of a united front to restore what the coalition sees as the integrity of Senegal’s democratic institutions.
