Dakar court takes on Ousmane Sonko over remarks on Touba

The Collectif des petits-fils de Serigne Touba has formally lodged a complaint against Ousmane Sonko at the Dakar high court, citing remarks he made about illicit funds allegedly entering the holy city of Touba. The filing, registered as case number 12562, follows a weekend speech by Sonko at the inauguration of his party’s headquarters in the capital.

In the complaint, the group, represented by spokesmen Serigne Modou Maroun Niang and Serigne Mourtalla Bousso, argues that Sonko’s comments have severely tarnished Touba’s reputation and undermined the dignity of its residents. They stress that Touba, founded by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, is built on pillars of faith, integrity, honesty, and justice. According to the plaintiffs, the allegations undermine the moral and spiritual integrity of a city revered across Senegal and beyond.

The collective has urged the prosecutor to launch a thorough investigation to verify the accuracy of the claims and assess any legal consequences. They are specifically requesting Sonko’s testimony to clarify the intent behind his statements and to provide evidence supporting his assertions. The group is seeking justice, insisting that if the allegations are unfounded, Sonko should face consequences for defamation, spreading false information, or other relevant offenses under Senegalese law.
